2013-01-16 Australie Rottnest Island (Western Australia)
    Nw 200m Off Rottnest

Headed out to Rottnest Island at 6.30pm aboard the Blue Destiny, nice charter boat and setup very good for divers and their gear. The actual location of the night dive was unknown with the skipper anchoring us aprox 200m off the North Western side of Rottnest, over a group of rock formations. The anchor line was set with a glow stick to find our way back. Apart from having a primary torch in hand and a secondary backup torch attached to my BCD, it was also mandatory to have a glow stick or light attached to your BCD or tank, this actually made it easy to find your buddy when with a group of divers (I buddied up with Lawrence), as we had the same colour glow sticks. Think there was about 21 divers all up for the night dive. Down we went for a 49 minute dive, the dive master’s brief was to surface at 50 minutes so not bad on the time. First time using my camera at night and I have a bit a learning to do, the inbuilt flash made every pic unviewable except for a small top portion of the frame where the flash escaped the housing – see my one uploaded picture of my buddy next to me. Next time I will make sure the flash is off or use a strobe. Joey from Perth Scuba had an awesome camera setup. Viz was great, if it was day time I would say aprox 15 meters, but could not see past the illumination of the torch which was aprox 6 meters. The bottom was reef rocks or lumps, which we circled around before swimming over a sandy bottom to the next lump. Some nice soft coral and the crayfish where out in force. There was a nice bright orange nudibrach as well as a very electric fluorescent fish of some kind that I could not identify. Other small fish where spotted – the fish where very passive at night. I sure there were other species out there … in the darkness  I will investigate dive torches as there was so much difference in the brightness of other divers torches which will make these dives more enjoyable, will also do some practice on night shots with the camera. Enjoyed the lollies and bickies provided on the way back – must remember to take a thermos of coffee next time. Chatting to the other divers has reviled another night dive worth checking, where Perth Diving Academy visit a site between Garden Island and Cockburn which is supposed to have some great corals and fish. Overall a great dive and experience, looking forward to the next one !!
