Finding the Giant Squid

par Ksso le 11 avril 2014

An absolutely must-see TED Talk by marine biologist Edith Widder explaingin how they managed to attract and make footage of the giant squid.

As Edith reminds us, we've only explored 5% of our oceans - there's still a lot to discover! Hidden in the abyss may be more wonders like the giant squid produced by hundreds of millions of years of evolution.

Free Marine Science and Conservation course

par Ksso le 23 janvier 2014

Coursera has made a name of itself as a prime source for online courses - mostly in the technical field. But this time is the scuba diver's passion which is being taught by David Johnston from Duke university. The course's outline, name's Megafauna, seems amazing and would be an awesome crash course for anyone willing to get more involved in Diveboard's citizen science projects.

This course is about sea turtles, whales, dolphins, seals, penguins, sharks, giant squid and other large ocean creatures - collectively known as marine megafauna - and what they can tell us about how the ocean works and why it is so important for all life on earth. This course will help you learn about life in the...

Reef Ball Foundation: rebuilding reefs one ball at a time!

par Ksso le 22 novembre 2013

At Dema I had the opportunity to meet with Todd Barber who manages the Reef Ball Foundation.

For those who haven't heard about reef balls, they're basically concrete hemispheres laid on the bottom of the ocean and planted with corals to build an artificial reef. As time passes, coral will eventually grow to totally cover the ball and make it indistinguishable from regular reefs.

I knew about such initiatives but I had no idea the scale Todd pushed it to - with over 750.000 reef balls deployed in 70 countries and 7000 sites in over 20 year - that's a hell lot of reef balls !  ...

Philippines wrecked by typhoon Haiyan - time to help!

par Ksso le 13 novembre 2013

As you may already have heard, typhoon Haiyan struck Philippines last friday causing massive amount of disaster and an estimate of about 2.500 deaths and 600.000 people left homeless by the category 5 typhoon. The island of Cebu, a very popular travel destination for scuba divers has been totally wiped out with about 90 to 95% buildings destroyed including hospitals and clinics.

The city of Tacloban one of the largest in the country with 220.000 has been ruined just the same (see the picture below)

DEMA 2013 is ON!

par Ksso le 6 novembre 2013

The DEMA show is the biggest  trade show in the industry. This year it's taking place in Orlando, FL, and the Diveboard team is there to meet and greet fellow divers - and cover the latest industry news.

We're here on a mission: explain to as many shops as possible that asking their customers to log their dives with them and leave a review is the best way to keep a connection with their past customers and hopefully have them think about them and recommend them to their friends.

The show opens today, but the networking floor was already on last night at the Rosen hotel where I got to hear so many inspiring stories about new found shipwrecks or artificial reefs being created ! Engaging with...

World Octopus Day

par Ksso le 9 octobre 2013

Yesterday was the World Octopus Day - joins me in the celebration of one of my favorite species to encounter during a dive.

Octopuses are playful and when you learn how to interact with them you're on for hours of fun (air permitting). But as the infographics above reminds us, they are far from being helpless - armed with strong tentacles and a powerful beak they can be dreadful if you are careless !

Also watch out for polluted areas - we know too well how octopuses react to toxic spills (if you missed that joke you probably need to play Day of the Tentacle) !

Whale Fantasy in Tonga Island

par Ksso le 27 septembre 2013

Perfect video to get ready to dive before the weekend! 3 mermaids freediving with humpback whales in Tonga islands. The images are totally breathtaking - especially when whales and mermaids roll on the side together - in a common silent understanding. This video was taken by Alan Watts and dive operator was Dolphin Pacific Diving.

Thanks Benoit for the tip !

Inspiring Ted Talk by Sylvia Earle

par Ksso le 23 septembre 2013

I stumbled on this TED talk by Sylvia Earle and if you haven't seen it already you need to take a few minutes of your time and get inspired. Earth and the oceans are our life support system - we need to learn everything we can about it and we need to take care of it.

Sylvia is an amazing explorer. Wikipedia reads : Earle has led more than 100 expeditions worldwide involving in excess of 7,000 hours underwater in connection with her research.[13] From 1998 to 2002 she led the Sustainable Seas Expeditions, a five-year program to study the United States National Marine Sanctuary sponsored by the National Geographic Society and funded by the Goldman Foundation. An expert on the impact of oil...

The Mantis Shrimp is making the buzz!

par Ksso le 2 septembre 2013

No one can remain untouched by the beauty of the Mantis Shrimp - with all the colors and the big eyes it's an awesome subject for underwater photographers, especially when bearing eggs. This little fellow can be found mainly in tropical and sub-tropical regions of the Pacific Ocean - if you're diving in that area make sure you'll look for it.

Despite the amazing colours and big intriguing eyes, it turns out the Mantis Shrimp is a terrible and very aggressive predator! The main feats of this species lies in two very different characteristics:

An incredible vision with extremely sophisticated eyes: each eye has 2 lobes enabling depth of vision on a per-eye basis, eyes are totally independent...
