Our sport and love of the oceans has given us so much pleasure we owe it

to the environment to return the favor. Due to intentional abuse of the

oceans and reefs, naturally occurring weather fluctuations and diseases

the reefs have suffered varying degree of damage. Reefs, to some

degree, can restore themselves if the damage is not to severe. But

unfortunately now in many cases it is.With our ability to

Spotting a seahorse on a dive is always is always an exciting experience. They

are just such unique and interesting fish!

Unfortunately because of their unique biological traits they

are also more vulnerable to threats like habitat destruction and overfishing.

Every year, 15 to 20 million seahorses are caught and

traded, dead and alive, all over the world. In order to better protect

these little guys we need more data on them. This is where iSeahorse comes in!

Reef Ball Foundation: rebuilding reefs one ball at a time!

At Dema I had the opportunity to meet with Todd Barber who manages the Reef Ball Foundation.

For those who haven't heard about reef balls, they're basically concrete hemispheres laid on the bottom of the ocean and planted with corals to build an artificial reef. As time passes, coral will eventually grow to totally cover the ball and make it indistinguishable from regular reefs.

I knew about such initiatives but I had no idea the scale Todd pushed it to - with over 750.000 reef balls deployed in 70 countries and 7000 sites in over 20 year - that's a hell lot of reef balls ! ...

I stumbled on this TED talk by Sylvia Earle and if you haven't seen it already you need to take a few minutes of your time and get inspired. Earth and the oceans are our life support system - we need to learn everything we can about it and we need to take care of it.

Sylvia is an amazing explorer.
