Video day: Discover Sorocco Islands

par Ksso le 20 octobre 2011

Darek Sepiolo has put together an incredible video of his trip in Socorro Islands he did onboard the Solmar V, a beautiful livaboard ship.

Socorro belongs to Revillagigedo archipelago. It's located in Pacific out of Baja California coast (Mexico). It's not very popular diving destination but it definitely deserves attention. Mainly because of very friendly oceanic mantas. Music John Newton Howard from "The Lady in the Water".

If you haven't dived in a while you will absolutely feel an urge to when you'll see the beautiful mantas, reef sharks and hammerheads  passing Darek peacefully in the blue.

Diveboard Feature updates: picture tags and titles, trip folders, SAC calculations...

par Ksso le 18 octobre 2011

A bunch of new updates as we speed forward the Beta release of Diveboard :

Picture tags and titles: On top of the drag-and-drop organization Interface letting you shuffle your pictures and select your featured picture, you now get a list interface letting you add on each pictures a title/comment and tag fishes from the fish database. When you tag a fish in a picture it will be automagically added to the list of species you spotted during the dive so if you're like me and take pictures of everything you see during a dive, that will probably be the place to start with for marking down the species you encountered. ...

Diveboard feature updates: Tanks, visibility and plugin

par Ksso le 11 octobre 2011

We start the week with a set of user request being delivered

Tank data :  You will now find in the "profile" section a "Tank & Gas" section letting you add details about what and how much you've been breathing during your dive. You can add the tank type, volume, start and end pressure and gas type (and even custom types for our tec diver friends). Naturally tanks will show up nicely formatted on the Profile section of your dive logbook.

Water visibility : Nothing really fancy but that basic info in now available on the main pane of the dive editor.

Plugin updates: Bugfixes on the Mares M2, better support for OSX Lion, Linux 64 bits (debian, tgz,  rpm package thanks to rubiojr !). If you...

Diveboard feature updates : Pictures, Buddies & Dive Shops

par Ksso le 5 octobre 2011

We have a long list of feature requests, so we started a spree to squash them and get you divers happy ! And the results a fairly cool (at least in our opinion here at Diveboard).

Pictures view and edit is now infinitely better. On the viewer side, you get a nice global view of your set in your page letting you quickly select the pics you want to show up. On the wizard side you can drag-and-drop the pics to rearrange them in the way you like.We also fixed an annoying Picasa bug which prevented some of our diveboarders to add their Picasa pics using the "share" link provided by Picasa. ...

Fish round-up : the Butterflyfish

par Ksso le 28 septembre 2011

I love Butterflyfish, they usually come in pairs and are kind enough to swim into the bule letting you take cool shots at them. Butterflyfish are part of the Chaetodontidae family which counts about 10 genera and 114 species. As described by the University of Michigan, members of this family vary considerably in terms of color, but all butterflyfishes share certain morphological traits such as a deep, laterally compressed body, ctenoid scales that extend onto the soft-rayed portions of the dorsal and anal fins, and jaws that may be slightly or extremely elongated. They can measure up to 30cm although the typical butterflyfish is more around 20cm and usually can be seen around 15-30m...

Fish round-up: Meet the boss : the Triggerfish

par Ksso le 20 septembre 2011

Triggerfishes are members of the Balistidae family which accounts for about 40 species. The Triggerfish is a fairly common species that can be found all over the oceans in tropical and sub-tropical waters (I recently saw a bunch in Thailand). The indo-pacific ocean offers the most diverse set of species.Divers know the triggerfishes well, especially if you've been diving during their nesting seasons since they get really aggressive. I heard numerous reports of divers being chased by them for a long time (and enven during deco stops which can be a hassle) -  in those circumstances do not hesitate to kick the triggerfish with your fins. The Triggerfish has a small but strong- jawed mouth...

Diveboard feature updates : "Blazing Fast" dive edition, power to the users !

par Ksso le 6 septembre 2011

This update has been on our mind for a very, very, very long time. We've been frustrated by the limitations of the dive editor wizard we had in place:

too little space to let us add more data kinds

too little flexibility to rearrange the data and make it both easier to read and manage while giving it more depth for advanced users

too slow to load (for some stupid reason it was loaded on demand instead of being pre-loaded within the page)

We broke it all to give you a totally rebuild and blazing fast dive editor with plenty of space to arrange the data in a readable way.To date the features are the same as with the previous editor, but with speed, and we're now busy at growing them.Aside...

Diveboard Feature updates : SDE & Spot Matching

par Ksso le 31 août 2011

A few days ago a user came to us with a pretty funny problem : he had a file a 200 dives he wanted to upload but wasn't happy with the ZXL and UDCF imports as they were since a lot of data was being lost in the translation. Additionally, we did not support the import of the spot name and location as there is no real standard way of saving those and thus it made it impossible to match them with out database data (or to update the database with new spots). So we added a few new feats : Support for SDE files: This is the preferred file format for your Suunto dive manager. If you've been using it to unload your Suunto computer you can now upload your dives in a super easy way and ensure that...

Fish round-up : the Humpback Whale

par Ksso le 25 août 2011

When it comes to whale-watching, the Humpback whale likes to be the star. This gigantic animal, around 12 to 16m long, is friendly and curious about object entering its environments and can often come for minute drolling around a boat full of excited whale-watchers. The Humpback is totally harmless to humans, set aside its huge raw force (being hit by a whale finn must hurt...). It feeds exclusively on krill and small fish. The species is pretty well scattered around the oceans with about 80 000 specimens migrating up to 25 000 km yearly from the cold northern waters in summer down to tropical waters. It's easy to recognize with unusually long pectoral fins and a knobby head. Since it's...

Self-Sufficient Diver & Solo Diving

par Ksso le 22 août 2011

Self-sufficient diving or "Solo Diving"  may sound like an odd concept for all scuba divers out there. Since the first training day, whatever the organization that's training you, you get brainwashed with the "Never Dive Alone" mantra. Nevertheless since the late 90s the idea of solo diving is starting to catch up acknowledging that  a properly trained and prepare diver willing to solo dive could actually do it. In 2001, a senior PADI official acknowledged for the first time that solo diving could be carried out in safety by suitably experienced divers. The first training agency to offer a Solo Diving certification was Scuba Diving International (SDI) in 1999. In 2011 the SCUBA training...
