    Long Bay

David (new diver) came with Jenson but aborted his dive after 10 mins (it was his first night dive so he was a bit apprehensive). First dive with the new Apollo torch. Jenson gave us free gear hire! Rex & Paivi just gave birth so were occupied with Sofa Current was quite strong, kept towards the south-western shoreline Craig & Jenson saw an eel (neither of us saw it). There was a weird octopus-like creature that I saw the tentacles of under a rock, but nobody else seemed to see it.

    Gravel Loader

Forgot the new dive computer, d'oh! Left with just the standard gauges on loan from Jansen. Païvi's first dive with us, and Rex's first dive since Sophia was born. Craig & Rob got told off (maybe fined) for violating the total fire ban! Had a lok over at another dive site that was supposed to be calmer (at the advice of the rural fire service) but it was no better, and had a terribly long walk to get to it. Returned to Gravel Loader for the dive. Several jellyfish with the coloured lights on the edges, quite a lot of others that seemed damaged / dead. Yuki found a tiny little electric blue fish, I found some larger electric blue ones. Craig was led to navigate out towards the pier, but went too quickly, lost his buddies (Païvi & Rex), whodidn't surface when they lost him. He went back into shore after waiting around without us, rather upset at not having a proper dive. Memo - with three in a buddy, agree on the lost-buddy procedure. Don't run off with the compass either! Especially Craig. Since I had given my SK-7 to Yuki, had to follow her and Païvi the two navigators, who led us out to the piers. Luckily none of the spear fishers were around (there were a number on shore; better here than Bushrangers Bay), there were a few medium sized fish of various shapes and sizes, but nothing really notable. After hanging around the bottom of the piers not being able to find Craig, Rex & I surfaced but still couldn't find him. Then on going back for the others Rex lost a fin, god only knows how. We swam around for ten minutes or so looking for it (after telling Yuki & Païvi) to no avail. After surfacing again and discussing the loss of Craig, and drifting with the wind quite a way past the piers we headed back in, Yuki navigating again and Rex swimming in circles behind us. Yuki's first lesson in underwater navigation - the compass is right no matter what your instincts say. We ended up fifty metres from where we should have been, and had a rocky exit rather than the nice easy boat ramp exit.
