Dive Buddy: Emily Strand Finally back in the water after not diving for over two weeks! And another night dive with Emily! Declan from OE was also supposed to join us, but he got stuck in traffic behind a car accident and couldn't make it. After Emily loaded up with banana bread, we hit the water and headed for the canyon. There were tons of small fish near the surface on the swim out that kept ramming us and hopping out of the water. Emily had some troubles equalizing on the descent, but after two tries and a good snot clear, she managed to make it to the bottom. The surge was fairly strong this dive, especially near the shallows, but we could feel it even by the wall. There were lots of octopus, rock crabs, and shrimp out, but not a single nudibranch! The highlights of the dive were a squid that Emily spotted twice (or maybe they were two different ones) which danced around for us before darting off and a decorator crab swaying on a kelp leaf.

Dive Buddies: Emily Strand, Evan Walsh Early morning dive with Emily! And Evan from the Two Divers Below group showed up randomly as well. Emily brought me a home made french toast latte and I baked blueberry scones for everyone. Evan plays Rocket League! Even though the sun was coming up as we swam out, the bioluminescence from the unusual red tide we've been having was still visible. Not much to see in the shallows as we did the surface swim, but once we descended there was lots of life. Octopus were still out and loads of sea hares including the biggest one I've ever seen! (Emily described it as being the size of a puppy) Spotted a few rock fish and scorpion fish, still more octopus, soles and halibut, and one Spanish shawl. Got photo-bombed by a cormorant while filming a decorator crab on the way in!

Dive Buddies: Eli Chavez, Britney Pellouchoud, Rebecca Riley Four person night dive during a heat wave! Britney borrowed a lot of stuff. Gave everyone a different colored tank light to make it easier to keep track. Saw a few horn sharks on the swim out and by the canyon one swam right next to me and Britney. Saw lots of rock crabs and a decent sized octopus. Rebecca miscommunicated (or I misunderstood) her pressure and we turned the dive early and then Britney had a runaway ascent and surfaced unexpectedly from ~45 ft. I followed her to make sure she was okay. Went down to check on Eli who had noticed but was doing his 3 min safety stop. Rebecca surfaced as well, but Britney and Rebecca didn't understand the hand signal Eli gave for safety stop and went back down and then all the way back up again, so I suggested we all just surface to talk it out. We swam back on the surface until we could see bottom again (~18 ft depth) and then descended to swim in the shallows a bit with our remaining gas. Saw a huge spiny lobster, about 2 feet long! Afterwards Rebecca was so pumped that she and I ended up snorkeling by the marine room with the remaining charge in our dive lights. We saw a handful of fairly large leopard sharks, lots of rays and lobsters, and a lone tope shark! Great night of diving!

Dive Buddy: Sebastian Silva, George Fedoseyev, Jeff (Divemaster in training) Peak Performance Buoyancy followed by wall run to the south. Saw a couple bass and a big sheephead. First time doing an open Water safety stop (George's idea).
