  • My wife and I, after many years of visiting Cancun, finally made time for a Discover Scuba course on our last visit. Loved it, went for three total supervised dives that week and were hooked. Signed up for our OWC as soon as we got home! Looking forward to many fun dives together in the near future!

Open Water Cert Dive #2 Skills Demonstrated: Full mask clear at depth, out of air alternate air source use w/buddy and controlled ascent, navigation w/compass on the surface and at depth, tired diver tows, buoyancy control and hovering, basic computer use, along with more snorkel work. Self aid on cramp relief midway through dive (left calf), but fine afterwards. Comfortable in 7mm suit, though mask lens fogging was an issue, though no leaks today. Needs more cleaning. Back inflation BCD was much easier to use and maintain body position, than jacket style used in the pool. Observed same fish, a nice drop off to >50', the car, pipe, boats and a helicopter. Some murkiness near the bottom by the helo.

Night dive with cloudier than normal water. Lots of up and down, looking into crevices. Some massive Lionfish, our first octopus, a spiny lobster, more eels, and some crabs tonight. Fewer Tarpons than usual tonight. Nice relaxing dive, even into the current we reached the wreck with 500 PSI to spare before the 1/3 rule turnaround, so we explored to our farthest North point yet. One of our best feeling dives yet. Think we're learning to relax both our finning and our breathing.

Second dive, better weighted at 18#. Better able to get down to platforms at 12-15' and maintain buoyancy. Nav practice, until compass acted up, spinning. Portions of dive silted out at 20+' and had to work to stay above thermocline in areas, or add air to BCD if below it. 7mm suit without gloves this dive. Hands chilled, but bearable. Suit/hood plenty warm.

    Buddy's Reef

Twilight dive. Fun dive towards the South, mostly drifting on the way out, and into the current on the way back. Saw a 15+ minute long river of blue fish with black mouths running South to North. Unbelievable how many fish there were! Of course no cameras on this swim... I led out and April led back, working on nav and maintaining depth. Very fun dive.
